08/25/2010: Server Updates and Security Patches

We will be installing all of the critical operating system security updates that are currently available for our hosting servers. We will be performing this maintenance between 02:00 a.m. and 06:00 a.m. Eastern. All of the patches that will be deployed have gone through our quality assurance process and are currently running with no issues on our test servers.

Impact: 15 - 30 minute service interruption

06/13/2010: Nework Maintenance

On Sunday, June 13, 2010, we will be performing remediation on the distribution switches in the datacenter where your installation resides. This is being performed in response to a service interruption which occurred last week based on advice from our vendor. The work will be conducted during our regular maintenance window between 2AM and 6AM ET. Impact as a result of this work is not expected to exceed 15 minutes.

01/31/2010: Server Maintenance Notice

Beginning Sunday January 31th at 11:00pm EST, Hosting.com will be initiating an equipment upgrade and limited reconfiguration of critical power infrastructure within the Newark Data Center. This work is being carried out to augment fault tolerance and redundancy within the facility and once completed will help ensure continued quality of service to our customer base.

No service interruption is anticipated during the course of this maintenance; Hosting.com engineering staff will be onsite to monitor activity and ensure all precautionary measures are in place.

This maintenance window will terminate at 6:00am EST.

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, we will be performing network maintenance on the distribution switches in the datacenter where you installation resides. The maintenance will be conducted during our standard maintenance window from 2AM to 6AM eastern time. During this time you may experience service impacting downtime not to exceed a cumulative total of 10 minutes.

01/13/2010: Server Maintenance Notice

Impact: Websites, Email, and Databases will not be available during this maintenance

Details:
On January 15th, we will be performing maintenance on our shared server network. This upgrade will be taking place during our regular maintenance window of 2AM to 6AM.

The impact of this maintenance will be the removal of any 10.x.x.x IP addresses space bound to shared servers.

PLEASE NOTE: Action is needed to update any references to these internal IP addresses to maintain website and database functionality.

1) Data Source Names (DSN's)
2) Any references to internal address in code such as database connection strings.

We will be monitoring traffic on the internal interfaces of each server prior to the maintenance in an attempt to update any references to internal IP addresses. However, we are urging any customers that are aware of any such configurations using the private IPs to please make any necessary updates prior to this scheduled maintenance.

On September 9th and 10th, 2009, we will be installing critical operating system security updates that have been released by Microsoft to address potential security concerns. More information regarding these critical updates can be found at:

We realize that this is not the normal patch week for your server, but due to the severity and urgency of these concerns, we will be performing this maintenance between 12:00 a.m. and 06:00 a.m. EDT. This extends our normal maintenance window by 2 hours to ensure that all servers are patched in a timely manner.

On Friday September 4, 2009, we will be performing work on the distribution switches in the datacenter where your installation resides.

06/17/2009: Server Maintenance Notice - Firmware upgrades

On Friday, June 19, 2009, we will be performing firmware upgrades to the top-of-rack switches in IDC4.NWK01 during our standard maintenance window of 2AM - 6AM ET. The new firmware has been tested both in lab and production environments and found to be suitable for mass deployment. The impact of the upgrade will result in downtime not to exceed 10 minutes per rack.

06/04/2009: Server Mainenance Notice

On Friday, June 5 2009 we will be performing emergency software upgrades to the switches in our rack to address potentially traffic impacting bugs in the current version. The work will be performed during our standard maintenance window of 3AM to 6AM eastern time, and will result in downtime not to exceed 10 minutes.

Though it is normally our practice to provide greater notice, we feel the severity of the bugs in question warrants immediate action on our part. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

This security update resolves four publicly disclosed vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker is allowed to log on to the system and then run a specially crafted application. The attacker must be able to run code on the local machine in order to exploit this vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could take complete control over the affected system.

This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008.

04/15/2009: Server Migration

Tonight at 10pm EST, we are migrating to brand new equipment as part of our 3-year hardware upgrade regimen. We expect no outages on your public-facing websites. However, admin logins will be diabled while we synchronize files and databases to the new server.

04/10/2009: SmarterMail Mail Server Software Upgrade

What: Mail Server Software Upgrade.
Impact: Mail will not be accessible during this upgrade.

Details:
On April 10th we will be upgrading the Smartermail software on your mail server. During this upgrade your mail services will need to be taken offline to complete the upgrade. This upgrade will be taking place during our regular maintenance window of 2AM to 6AM. We estimate two to four hours of downtime.

06/16/2008: Minor Outage

At approximately 11:33 am EST we experienced a network issue involving our core switches in our dedicated network. This problem resulted in an unstable network state and some web sites experienced intermittent connectivity problems. After discovery, this was resolved at approximately 11:40am by our network team.

While this may have gone unnoticed by most of our clients, we apologize for any inconvenience or downtime you may have experienced.

04/11/2008: Two hour server outage

Impact: Two hour server outage

Details: Letter to hosting customers from HMS

This evening 4/11/2008 at 11:26 we experienced a customer impacting incident in our DC3 datacenter facility. The incident caused momentary power loss in the facility which power cycled all of the equipment. While most equipment came back online quickly, even a momentary power loss is a very disruptive event for a large datacenter. At the moment we are handling many situations where either hardware or software did not recover correctly. We are working very hard to answer all calls and respond as quickly as possible to all impacted customers. Additional staff is continuously arriving at our facilities to assist, and we will continue to bolster our staff as quickly as we can. I wanted to get this communication out to our customers as quickly as possible and we will provide more complete updates when we have 100% of our customers operational.

Specifically the main transformer feeding power to our building experienced degradation causing a low voltage condition. As best we can tell, our parallel redundant Liebert UPS drained its batteries from dealing with the prolonged voltage irregularity, and when the transfer switch attempted to take us back to street power, the UPS did not handle the load. This is a very early approximation of the situation and we will provide a full assessment as details become available.

11/16/2007: Email & Spam Issues Fixed

11/16/07:
By way of update, the email issues this morning (Fri.) were the result of installing a new firewall at our hosting facility last night. This new, specialized firewall is to address increasing levels of spam we have to deal with daily. Upon installation, the network engineer locked all the ports out, but neglected to open back up the standard email port of 25. Hence, we experienced issues this morning momentarily. It was fixed by 10:00am. I apologize for the inconvenience and we shouldn’t see these issues again.

Earlier in the week, the email issues we had were from an enormous amount of spam stopping up our mail servers. In addition to our firewall upgrade, Innersync will be implementing (and requiring) Postini Spam Service for all email addresses in order to better deal with spam.

Innersync has been using the Postini service for over two years along with a select group of our other clients. Our experience and the feedback from clients has been so positive, that Innersync has integrated the service into all our email hosting packages. It is by far the best method of dealing with today’s spam quanities. Accordingly, there is a fee of $2 per month, per email address that we will be adding to your hosting bill for Postini service. You will again be able to login in the morning and see 15-20 legitimate emails with little to no spam in the way.

Here is a summation of how it works:

All incoming email will be scanned by the Postini spam service before it ever arrives on Innersync servers. Clean email will be delivered to your inbox. Suspect email will be held back in your personal Postini account. You will be emailed a regular quarantine summary of emails that Postini has not delivered to your inbox. You will be able login to Postini at your convenience, glance over them, check the email that should be “delivered” to your inbox (if any) and delete the spam. Any email that you choose to “deliver” to your inbox, will be automatically added to a whitelist. Best of all, you have control over your own spam sensitivity settings within your Postini account. Over a short amount of time, it becomes VERY effective on allowing good email through and holding back bad email. Specifically, it never makes it to the Innersync mail servers, hence keeping our server from being overwhelmed with spam and virus-infected emails.

Accounts will be set up individually, and billing will not start until afterwards. You will be sent an email with your account login and instructions. Please let us know if you have any questions or problems and we look forward to playing a part in dealing with the modern day spam epidemic.

11/15/2007: Installation of new Firewall & VPN

New dedicated Firewall and VPN installed. We added this protection mainly for client databases, but it along with setting up clients in Postini Spam Service will help to manage and control spam and viruses. Please notify us with any problems.

10/01/2007: SmarterMail 4.3.2830 Upgrade Applied

SmarterMail Release 4.3.2830 includes:

Addition of spam checks to prevent the use of scripts to send spam out through the webmail interface.
New spam scoring log of outgoing messages that were blocked as spam.
Improvements to the handling and display of foreign characters in email bodies and attachments.
Twenty new additions, fixes, upgrades, and improvements.
