In IE8 (Internet Explorer 8,) when I log in to the CMS, and go out to a web page on my site, I am missing the top dash bar. If I click "refresh," the dash bar appears. Likewise, when I log out and come back to the same page, I see the dash bar, as if I'm logged in. What is going on?

Publisher Tools

The default settings for page caching in IE8 is the culprit. When you visit a web page in IE8, the page is stored on your computer in a temporary files page. By default, IE8 is told to keep that page for 20 (or more) days before downloading it again. This makes it so when you log out (or in) and you come back to the same page, it is not re-downloaded... hence not showing you what you would expect. If you are a page content author who is frequently logging in and out of the CMS at your institution, here is how we recommend you change the settings in IE8:

Go up to "TOOLS" menu and select "Internet Options"

Then, on the "General" tab, under "Browsing History", click the "Settings" button.

Notice by default, for "Check for Newer versions of stored pages, IE8 has "Automatically" selected.

Change this setting to "Every time I visit the web page"

The issue is corrected.

There is a trade-off. This means that your browser is told to download the pages on your website with every visit to the page. Technically, it would take longer to load the pages, but that longer time is not normally noticeable and will greatly benefit the content authors logging in and out of your system.

I will no go add this to the support site.
